Gordon now returns to his beloved Edinburgh. We shall miss his honest, selfless devotion to the pupils in his care. We shall miss his unwillingness to bend to the latest fads in education and we shall miss his unflinching honesty.

“This Parliament must always be on the side of victims of abuse. We must have the truth of what happened to them and how the organisations and individuals into whose care the children were entrusted failed them so catastrophically. We will get to that truth, and we will establish a national public inquiry into historical abuse of children in institutional care.”—Angela Constance, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning

RAINY BROWN James (Edinburgh) Suddenly, on April 29, 2013, at the age of 75 years, devoted Master at Merchiston Castle School. Funeral private at his request.

Merchiston Castle School was sad to learn of the tragic death of James Rainy Brown on Monday 29 April 2013. James devoted his life to Merchiston, as boy and man, and at this sad time our thoughts are with his close friends and family.

This document was included as James Rainy Brown’s address seems to exist nowhere else, it is known that he hosted pupils at this address, and may assist with survivor testimony.

After the war, Ian devoted the rest of his life to Merchiston Castle School, where he taught biology, became a housemaster, continued teaching until 1971 and remained closely involved in school life for very many years afterwards. He had a profound influence on generations of pupils. He loved travelling, had a very cosmopolitan outlook, never married but loved the company of women and was much loved by nieces, nephews and god-children. Ian had a deep Christian faith which found expression in his infectious zest for life.
