Merchiston Terminology: Female Housemasters
“The concept of assistant housemasters was important. We had something like 15 or more members of staff living in the boarding houses. It is important to note the use of terminology as some of the housemasters and assistant housemasters were female but they still wished to be called housemasters and assistant housemasters. They refused to be called housemistresses, despite my invitation. I had many female leaders at Merchiston Castle School, including housemasters and members of the SLT.
